Does anybody have a list of the 'name' bands in the Live Music Archive? By 'name' I mean bands who have had some chart activity on either Billboard or the college/community radio boards. Examples I've seen here: Grateful Dead, Tom Tom Club, Cowboy Junkies, Martin Sexton, Was (Not Was), Susan Tedeschi, etc

Also, does anybody have a sounds-like list or cross-referential database to discover new talent? Like I would plug in the words reggae or acid house and all the bands that fit come up. I know Archive uses key-words but they're not always accurate.

Another question (and I know everybody asks this): how is it that so many people you would expect to be here (for all their fuck the establishment or throw-our-arms-around-the-world rhetoric) are not here, such as Lou Reed, Laurie Anderson, Patti Smith, REM, X, Joy Division, Gang of Four, Violent Femmes, Au Pairs, Black Flag, Natalie Merchant, and so on?

Oh, and one other thing -- why so little classical music?

very good points.

i'd say other name bands on here: Jack Johnson, Jason Mraz, Howie Day, John Mayer, Xavierr Rudd, John Butler Trio, Of a Revolution, Spoon, Britt Daniels, Death Cab For Cutie, The National, Kaki King, Umphrees McGee, Etc.

I wish more 'mainstream' bands would OK it, but for 90% of them, and the record label, it is easier to just say no or just say nothing at all and never give official stamp to it and just look the otherway with fan taping..

Camper Van Beethoven, Cracker, Robyn Hitchcock, Dawes, Dave Alvin, Tenacious D, Meat Puppets, Butthole Surfers, Howe Gelb, Giant Sand, Dumpstaphunk, The Gourds, Quasi, Sarah Borges, Grace Potter, Blues Traveler, Mother Hips, Edie Brickell, and the late great Warren Zevon!

By skimming the list for names that seemed somehow familiar and plugging those into allmusic.com (considered a reliable source by Wikipedia), I was able to determine that the following Archive bands, not previously mentioned, have appeared on various Billboard charts:

...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead
Ben Kweller
Big Head Todd and the Monsters
Blind Melon
Carbon Leaf
Charlie Hunter
Damien Rice
David Gray
Del McCoury Band
Dirty Dozen Brass Band
Explosions in the Sky
Fishbone
Fugazi
Galactic
Gin Blossoms
Jefferson Starship
Jesca Hoop
John Brown's Body
Keller Williams
Little Feat
Local H
Matt Nathanson
Mike Doughty
Mogwai
New Riders of the Purple Sage
Pat McGee
Radiators
Robert Randolph
Rusted Root
Ryan Adams
Smashing Pumpkins
Soul Coughing
Southern Culture on the Skids
Stanton Moore
Subdudes
Taylor Hicks
Tegan and Sara
The Decemberists
The Samples
Toby Lightman
Tristan Prettyman
Vanessa Carlton
Vienna Teng

There were a few cases where more than one band or artist with the same name was listed on Allmusic, and I mostly skipped those. There's probably many more whose names didn't trigger any sort of recognition with me, so I didn't check them.

edit: removed a dup I'd overlooked
